TRANSLATION

Translation of a text from one language to another is above all an intellectual and professional service which must meet several criteria and parameters that are defined by the Client’s needs and requirements. Every translation is unique and must convey both the form and the substance of the content of the original text to a given public.

TRANSLATION PROJECT ORGANIZATION

Every translation is unique; consequently it is essential to determine the skills, resources and methodologies to dedicate to the project in order to obtain an excellent translation written in good style.  These parameters are stipulated in the personalized quote, and are defined in the set of specifications agreed upon by Athenea Omnilang and the Client when organizing the translation project. It is important to point out that the quality of a translation is, to a certain extent, measured by compliance with these specifications.

Criteria taken into account in organizing the translation project

The translation project begins with the determination of the different languages the project involves.

Athenea Omnilang proposes translations in the following languages*:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Russian
  • Spanish

*Upon simple request, we can propose translation services in other languages and fields. To submit your project, ensured of total confidentiality, please go to our quotes and pricing space.

It is crucial to determine the type of language involved in the translation project, for expressions, idiomatic expressions and vocabulary used by the speakers of a same language can change significantly from one country to another. For instance, texts translated into American English will not necessarily be perceived in the same way by an audience from Great Britain. Careful definition of the version can target the proper choice of expressions and avoid irreparable pitfalls. (See also Adaptation).

Precise determination of the specialization field of a document is extremely important, particularly in cases where the translation requires verification by an expert in the field, to control and validate the accuracy of the content.

Athenea Omnilang proposes translations in the following business sectors*:

  • Diplomacy & international relations
  • Haute couture
  • Furnishings & layout
  • Wine, spirits & champagne

*Upon simple request, we can propose translation services in other languages and fields. To submit your project, ensured of total confidentiality, please go to our quotes and pricing space.

The objective and scope of the document are decisive parameters in organizing the translation project. Translation of an advertising slogan, catch phrase or concept can require as many or more resources than a translation of a document with less reach or impact such as a company memo or other.

Another essential criteria during the translation project organization phase is the determination of the audience the translated document targets. For instance, the language register used to address a group of experts will be different from the register to reach the general public. (See also: Adaptation).

These parameters impact project scheduling and resources: tight deadlines and long texts often entail assignment of more than one translator, or work done outside of business hours.

Texts for translation are often sent in formats (PDF, images, XML, etc.) which require the text to be extracted prior to translation. This operation takes time and must be taken into account in the translation project organization phase.

Calculation of the price is generally based on the source word. The cost of a translation is thus the result of the total number of words times the price for the requested language combination (English into French, for example). Other costs for additional services can be added to this minimum base price. Such services can include word processing, review, proofreading, special layout, certification of certified translations, and other. In all cases, the cost of the translation project is always established on a case by case basis.  (Click here for a personalized quote).

Depending on the Client’s requirements and the type of the project, other criteria can be taken into account during the project organization phase.
